Obituary

ROCKVILLE- Thomas A. McMurtry, 85, of Rockville, Indiana passed away Sunday, September 20, 2020 in his residence. He was born January 6, 1935 in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee to the late Alvin McMurtry and Mackie Mires McMurtry. His wife of 63 years, Inez Overpeck McMurtry whom he married March 10, 1956 preceded him in death September 19, 2019. 

He is survived by three children, son Greg (Tina) McMurtry of Kingman; two daughters, Karen (Scott) Sheetz of Rockville and Debra McMurtry of Winter Haven, Florida; two brothers, Wayne (Charlea) McMurtry of Rockville and Carl (Wanda) McMurtry of Goodlettsville, Tennessee; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Mitchell, Bibbie West and Joyce Crowder. 

He and Inez were co-owners of Overpeck Hardware and Appliance Store in Rockville with her brother, Bill Overpeck, and his wife, Wanita. They retired in 2017 after owning and operating McMurtry's Usedful Furniture store, also in Rockville. 

He was a 1953 graduate of Rockville High School and served with the U.S. Army. He was known to many as “Tennessee Tom”. He was proud to have played on the RHS basketball team that lost to Montezuma who went on to play Milan High School .  

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockville serving as deacon, trustee and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Parke County, Inc. Board of Directors and a Gideon. He loved serving the Lord. 

Private graveside services will be in Memory Garden Cemetery in Rockville. 

A public memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, October 24, at the Rockville First Baptist Church, 1250 US-41, Rockville, with the Rev. Garry Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 12 noon until services at the church.
