Historical Review - 2019

Beginning in 2003 and continuing through the 2007 reunion/golf outing, the Rox Athletic Alumni Planning Committee met to review the state of the outing and financial impact we were having at the time. For the first five years of the event, any monies left over from the outing were simply given to the school to use as they saw fit. As the event grew into a larger more successful event, supporters began to ask questions as to what the funds were being used for by the athletic department. With the untimely passing of former AD Stan Gideon, the Committee agreed that the timing was right to make some changes to support accountability.

Thus, the Committee agreed that beginning in 2008 it would open a checking account for funds to flow through and allow the committee to be accountable for where the monies would go.  A couple of ideas were discussed and approved for future use.

One item that was discussed was the development of a scholarship fund.  To further support the athletes of RHS, the Committee felt it would be good to emphasize the “Student” side of “Student/Athlete” by creating scholarships to give to graduating seniors. After discussion with the Parke County Community Foundation, it was agreed that there would an endowment created with the Foundation and when the Athletic Alumni contribution level reached $2500, the Foundation would match the investment taking the total investment to a $5000 endowment. The Committee fulfilled their original match for the endowment with the Foundation and the total value of the fund now exceeds $15,000.  Since 2009 the Committee has awarded twenty (22) $500 scholarships totaling $11,000 to graduating Rox athletes. In addition, the Committee provides coaches the opportunity to request items through the Athletic Director for consideration by the Committee. Since the inception of the Rox Athletic Alumni Reunion/Golf Outing in 2003, over $60,000 has been raised for Rox Athletics/Scholarships.
