John Thomas Alden (JA) passed away August 16, 2026, at age 81. Born on January 11, 1945, he grew up in Rockville, IN and is preceded in death by his parents John T. Alden and Mary Faison Alden. He graduated as valedictorian from Rockville High School in 1963 and was a star varsity athlete in track, football and basketball. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree at Duke University. Following graduation in 1967, John joined the United States Marine Corps. Rising to the rank of Captain, he proudly served as an F-4 Phantom jet fighter pilot. His decorated service included the National Defense Service Medal and the elite USMC Pistol Badge Expert rating. He graduated from Indiana University Law School in Indianapolis in 1975. The foundation of education and military discipline carried into his personal life where he served as an attorney in Marion County. He began in the Prosecutor’s Office, before establishing his own private practice specializing in criminal defense trial law and was appointed to serve as Judge Pro Tem in 1982. He spent the final chapter of his career serving in the Public Defender’s Office, Major Felony Division; 2006- 2025. John had an extraordinary zest for learning and life experiences. A former Jeopardy! contestant, he relished friendly competition—whether in golf or gin rummy. An avid sports fan, he loved memorable trips to Las Vegas, great food, and live entertainment. He is survived by his siblings Betsy and Bob Alden; former wife, Gail Gibson Alden; daughter, Ashley Alden; son, John “Johnny” Alden (Amy Walsh); and five cherished granddaughters: Abigail, Lilly, Maddie, Maggie, and Claire who endearingly called him “Granddaddy.” A memorial service with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 4th, at the Crown Hill National Cemetery Annex: 725 W. 42nd Street, Indianapolis. Followed by a private gathering with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you simply honor his favorite outlook on life: “Carpe Diem.” Go out, enjoy yourself, and seize the day!
