(From Phil Garrigus,'68) Although I took this straight off of my Rox Alumni profile, this is my fondest memory of Mr. Graves:

I recall with a great deal of laughter when I was taking driver's training and Bill Graves was my instructor. We were east of Montezuma somewhere in the backroads of Parke County when the car I was driving rolled over a huge pothole...dropping low enough to actually hit the frame of the car on the pavement. Naturally, you probably could have heard the "crash" clear back to Rockville, and it startled Mr. Graves to the point that he instinctively (in his characteristic bold, gruff voice) shouted out a phrase that was not considered, shall we say, "proper in public". I mention that with no disrespect to Mr. Graves whatsoever...his was just a natural response. I laugh about it to this day. I just never, ever told Dad what Mr. Graves said!!

Mr. Graves was one of my favorite teachers. He was my health teacher. He was a funny man. He would tell you just before a test if you do know the answer come ask me I will tell you. So when most of the students failed one test. He really got on our cases and told us there was no excuse for anyone failing as we did not listen to what he told us before hand. Of course we didn't think he was serious about telling us the answer but he was, that was his way of finding out who was really paying attention in class.
He also had the nickname of Gravy(which he hated) from a lot of students. Most of the time at school when someone would call him that he would give them a teasing evil look and wisecrack something funny back. However, when one student saw him in town from across the street and yelled out Hey gravy, he let us know in class the next time that it was very embarrasing to him and to please do not call him that anymore. But, sometimes at school(only) when he or we were kidding around we would still call him that and laugh and walk away.

Mr. Graves!!!!! Gruff ole Mr. Graves...LOL I remember when we were in the 7th grade and had Mr. Graves for Social Studies or History. In the midst of class he leaned over his desk to get a piece of paper and his chair, being on wheels, flipped out from under him and dumped him on the floor under his desk. Oh my gosh...we were all too afraid of him to laugh but we were about to burst!!! Finally one of his hands came up on the desk then the other...then his head began to rise above the desk. I still laugh to this day over the look on his face!

I liked Peachy because he liked me. Some of you might remember when I tried to fix his prize Tudor Rolex watch he got in WWII in History class. It did not work out to well!! We would talk a lot about the war and when he lived in Rockville and the train running in his back yard just off High street. He was super proud of his boy and should have been when he made General. He told me he got Malaria
while over seas and how bitter Quinine was without some elixir to go with it. Always wanted to know what elixir he was talking about.
When I would ask he would just give me that sideways smile and never answer.

By the time I had Mr. Graves, he was well up there in age. He tried to act gruff but I think he was just a teddy bear inside.  I always got along very well with him. I had him for 7th grade history.  A couple of funny stories was on every Friday we would have "current event".  We knew that this was the time that Mr. Graves would "take a nap" so some of the articles from the paper we brought in were a riot.  But one day, Jeff Ruhn was acting up and Mr Graves made him stand in the trash can.  It was too funny!!!

"Current Events"  were often not very current.  If we forgot to bring our newspaper article for Current Events day each week, we just used an old one....over and over again. Mr. Graves never seemed to notice....Or did he?

I was in Drivers Ed with Mr Graves. I wasn't very good. The other kids in the car were. I was already nervous knowing this. We were driving down a country road and I was driving so bad that I scared Mr. Graves and he cussed. Naturally this made me cry, but I was afraid to take the hands off the wheel. Shortly after he said he was sorry. I was in complete shock. A teacher apologizing! I didn't say anything. I couldn't from the tears, trying to drive, and being in shock. Then to my utter amazement he asked me "Well do you forgive me?" I think I could only nod my head. This is one memory that was burned into my brain.
