Leon F. Urbain

After graduating from Rockville in 1905, Leon went to Depauw University for two years before attending the University of Illinois and graduating in 1910 with a BS degree in architecture. Leon married in 1911 and began his architecture career in Chicago. Leon & his wife had a son in 1915. After America entered WWI in 1917, Leon was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve and was sent to France, where his fluent French was an asset. He was promoted to Major in 1918 and assigned to the Chemical Warfare Service, still in France. When the war ended in 1919, Leon stayed on to help with the reconstruction of France. Bringing his wife & son to France to live, a daughter was born in 1920 & the family returned to the United States in 1925. After his return to Chicago, Leon resumed his architecture career, designing many residential houses and high rise apartment buildings, one that is listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. Leon later formed a company called Loxit Systems, which made school & industrial supplies and fixtures. He received a number of patents on his inventions. After retirement, Leon continued to serve on 7 boards of directors, lectured at the Chicago Academy of Sciences and taught school children on the use of microscopes. He died in 1982 at the age of 95. His wife died a year later. They had been married 70 years.
