Joseph Allen Cooper, 77, of Rockville, Indiana passed away Sunday, June 16, 2024, in his residence. He retired from the United States Postal Service on October 31, 2003, with 35 years of service. He was born May 17, 1947, in Clinton, Indiana to the late Ralph Clayton Cooper and Sylvia Maxine Elmore Cooper.
Survivors include two brothers, Dale Cooper and Rick (Patty) Cooper of Rockville; one sister, Nina (Bob) Lindsay of Clinton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marlene White.
He was a 1965 graduate of Rockville High School where he participated in Track & Field, and Football. In second grade his teacher wrote on his report card that “we all enjoyed Joe’s sense of humor” and that continued throughout his life. He completed Basic training for the Army in Fort Campbell, Kentucky on March 31, 1967.
He served with the U. S. Army as Private Joseph Allen Cooper and served during Vietnam War as a supply engineer. He was honorably discharged on January 1, 1973. He was a faithful Christian and an active member of the Marshall Federated Church. He was a member of the American Legion Fellenzer post 48. During his career with the Rockville Post Office, he was recognized for his exemplary attendance record and as a safe driver. He enjoyed singing and playing gospel music at church and with various groups over the years. He played Hank Williams at the Ritz follies for several years. He enjoyed, hunting, fishing, target shooting and always joking around with family and friends. He was very patriotic and loved his country. He took great pride in maintaining his home and property.
Services will be 10:30 am Thursday, June 20, at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard Street, Rockville, with Pastor Brian Holt officiating. Burial with military honors by Parke County veterans will follow in Memory Garden Cemetery, Rockville. Visitation is from 6-8 pm Wednesday, June 19, at Gooch Funeral Home.
