Steve Beatty - Class Of 1969

Steve Beatty

Steven C. Beatty, age 63, of Versailles, passed away Friday, August 8, 2014, at his home. He was born July 22, 1951, in Clinton, Indiana, the son of the late Virgil M. and Marjorie S. (Jones) Beatty.

On June 6, 1970, in Boonville, he was united in marriage to his surviving wife, Shirley (Hazlett) Beatty.

After Steve and Shirley were married, Steve worked at a pharmacy in Boonville as a pharmacy technician. Then, after their son, Michael, was born in 1973, Steve was hired as an agent with the Katy Railroad in New Franklin. He was later promoted to train engineer in 1975 and eventually moved to Collinsville, Illinois. He ran trips in mid Missouri and into Tennessee until he decided he wanted to pursue his love of woodworking from just a hobby into a full-time business. He bought Custom Woodworks and Kitchens in Versailles from Norman Williams in 1992. He endured many long hours and made many friends along the way. He often said that next to the deep love of his immediate family, the love of woodworking came in a close second place.

Steve found out he had cancer in June 2010 and he kept working in his shop until June 24, 2014. His great admiration and satisfaction he received from his woodworking kept him going strong. He was highly regarded by his customers and community both personally and professionally.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by his son, Michael Beatty and wife Marie of Versailles; four grandchildren, Joseph Beatty, Bryan Teague, Domonic Teague and Dylan Teague; his mother, Marjorie Beatty of St. Charles, Missouri; his sister, Jeanie Kirk and husband Don of St. Charles, Missouri; his sister-in-law, Wanda Davis of Fairborn, Ohio and several nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil M. Beatty and a sister, Mary Etta Dowd.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 15th, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles with Chaplain Jeremy Caudel officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Lake Regional Cancer Center.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles.

Steve and I shared Christmas greetings every year since high school without a miss.  I only saw him twice after graduation; at Christmas break from college in 1969, and at his home in 1985 but we always remained in touch every year during the holidays.  I am sad to have found the news of his death upon searching his name on the Internet recently, having missed his Christmas letter this year.  Steve loved to work, and it appears that he remained doing what he loved best, building cabinetry and furniture out of beautiful woods and with his meticulous craftmanship,  right up until the final few days of his life.  He lived all his adult life in Missouri. Condolences to his wife and family.  I will sure miss those handwritten pages from him each year at Christmas time.
