Dale Alexander - Class Of 1960

Dale Alexander

Clarence Dale Alexander, 81, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away on December 23, 2023 surrounded by his family.  Dale was born on July 5, 1942 to Clarence Jessup Alexander and Mignon Willhite Newlin in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He graduated  from Rockville High School in Rockville, Indiana in 1960.  While in high school, Dale focused on playing for the successful ROX basketball team and beginning what would become many lifetime friendships. Dale joined the United States Navy serving aboard the USS Coral Sea-CVA-43 from 1963 -1967 during its tours in the Vietnam War. Following his Naval service, Dale graduated from Indiana State University and settled in Clinton, IN where he started a family, built a successful insurance practice with Farm Bureau, and continued making valuable friendships.

In 1997, Dale married Lynn Alexander. Retiring early, Dale and Lynn relocated to Hilton Head Island to become the owner/operators of Nash Gallery. While in Hilton Head, Dale focused his years on doing those things that brought him great joy-- playing golf, fishing under the sun, living in beautiful surroundings and spending time with family and friends. He valued every minute spent with his grandson Dean.
Dale is survived by his loving wife Lynn, brother David and wife Robyn, son Nelson and daughter-in-law Ana Pinto-Alexander, stepsons Scott and Chris Price, and grandson Dean Price, along with many nieces and nephews.

A celebration will be held on Sunday March 3 from 2-5 at Mixx's restaurant on Main Street.

Strange how what seems at the time to be such a small and insignificant gesture can have such a huge impact over an entire lifetime!
One night back in 1960, then  senior Dave Alexander spotted a lowly four feet tall 7th grader sitting on the court house curb in front of the Presbyterian church.
Dave pulled his car over and asked him why he was sitting on the curb under a street light all alone.   The 7th grader replied that he was hoping that someone heading toward Catlin would stop and give him a ride home.   Dave told the young boy to get in the car and that he would drive him 5 miles down to Catlin.
Sixty some years later that young 7th grader never forgot that act of kindness from a Senior with a car.
That 7th grader was me.    I never forgot his generous act of kindness to an underclassman so long ago.

May my friend forever rest in peace.

Yesterday, March 3, 2024, I attended Dale's celebration of life here on Hilton Head Island, SC.  The event was well attended where food , libations, and stories were shared by all.  One story told to me by an employee was how Dale would come in to their store/business and conduct computer work, and things needing to be done early in the mornings before opening time of the shop.   Typically Dale, that way he wouldn't have to talk to anyone!

Dale's photo in his Rox basketball uniform was shown on a large screen along with other photos of his life.   That picture is how I remember him and those great basketball days of our youth.   Fitting too, for us Hoosiers, was the IU game being shown on the big screen to the right!!    Being the lone Rockville Connection person in attendance, it was good to pass along condolences and sympathies to his wife and son, Nelson.

Rest in Peace Dale Alexander.
