Verna D. Crooks, 103, of Fishers, Indiana, formerly of Rockville, passed away on September 8. Verna was born August 20, 1921 in the New Discovery neighborhood in Parke County. She was the only child of William and Lola (Wimmer) McArty.
She was a 1939 graduate of Rockville High School. She was a ten year 4-H member, Junior Leader, and an active member of the Rural Youth Club. Verna was a state winner in the Rural Youth State Public Speaking Contest held in Indianapolis. Verna was employed at the Office of Price Administration during WWII.
Verna married Warren Crooks on July 18, 1943 and they were married for 70 years. She enjoyed being a homemaker for her family. Verna joined the New Discovery Baptist Church at age 13, later transferring her membership to Rockville Christian Church, where she was an active member of the choir and sang solos and in a trio. She was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and taught Vacation Bible School. She was a charter member of the Friendly Circle Home Economics Club, and later joined the Harmony Home Economics Club and Current Literature Club.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband Warren and her son, Allen. Survivors include one daughter, Kay (Richard) Wolford of Fishers, IN; a daughter-in-law, Janet Crooks, of Thayne, WY; six grandchildren—Davin Crooks, Nicole (John) Lowe, Stephanie (Tom) Pitts, Brian Crooks, Aaron Wolford, and Shannon (Steve) Reitz. Also, eight great-grandchildren—Mackenzie Lowe, Brooklyn Reitz, Joey Crooks, Ava Lowe, Kayla Rice, Elijah Wolford, Jordan Rice, and Summer Reitz.
Services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 11, at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard Street, Rockville, with Pastor Wayne Moyer officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Garden Cemetery in Rockville. Visitation is 12 noon until 2:00 pm Wednesday at Gooch Funeral Home.
