Obituary

Ernest C. Smiley, 91, of Rockville, passed away on November 11, 2020 and is now sitting in a porch swing with his beloved wife, Jean. Ernie was born on February 19, 1929 to Leon and Alice Cramer Smiley in Rockville, Indiana. He graduated from Rockville High School as a member of the class of 1948. After School, Ernie married B. Jean Everson on June 11, 1951. He then joined the US Army and served in the Korean War. Upon his return, Smiley began his over 40-year career as a mechanic at Jacks and Jacks Motors. Ernie was well known around town and could often be found eating his favorite biscuits and gravy at the local restaurants. He was known for his mischievous nature, bountiful garden and lover for his wife and family. 

Ernie is survived by his son, Darrell (Evelyn) of Rockville, Grandchildren; Teresa (Andrew) Claxton of Fredericksburg, VA; Michael ( Amanda) Smiley of Huntersburg, NC and Laura (Riley) Buttry of Greenfield, IN. He also had 4 great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Annaleigh Smiley and Tucker and Hudson Buttry. 

Ernie is also survived by one sister, Ramona (Bob) Byers. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Alice Smiley; Brother Ronnie Smiley and great granddaughter, Adeline Buttry. 


Funeral services will be held Monday, November 16th, 10:00 AM at Immanuel Southern Baptist Church in Midway with Pastor Mark Houvenagle officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, November 15th, 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the Church. Burial will follow in Memory Garden Cemetery in Rockville with Military Graveside Rites by Parke County Veterans. Arrangements entrusted to Barnes and Rice Funeral Home of Rockville.
