She told the best stories I ever heard.

I memorized "The Owl and the Pussycat" in her class and I still can recite most of it after all these years. I remember she was short and round and gave the best hugs. A perfect first grade teacher.

I never had Mrs. Merry for a teacher but do remember how kind she was on the playground. I had fallen out of the swing and had skinned up my knee pretty good - remember we weren't allowed to wear pants then, only dresses. Blood was dripping down my knee and she ran over to me, helped me up and then leaned over and took her own skirt and wiped the blood off my leg. She walked me into the nurse's office and made sure I got the orange medicine painted on my knee (what was the name of that stuff?)and a band aid. Years later, when I had my 3 daughters, my mom arranged for Mrs. Merry to make each of my daughters a Raggedy Ann doll. The dolls are treasured by my girls and to me it's a reminder of a sweet lady who truly did care about all children - not just her students.

Before religion was taken out of the classrooms, Mrs. Merry taught every second grader Psalms 23 to be recited during the Christmas program. Although she wasn't my school teacher, I was in her Sunday school and Bible school classes at the Methodist Church. She knew her Bible and its teaching and passed that knowledge to hundreds of kids who entered her classroom doors.

MRS. MERRY WAS MY SCHOOL TEACHER, MY SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER AND ALSO MY SCOUT LEADER. SHE WAS A NEAT LADY. I REALLY LIKED HER AND HER FAMILY, GEORGE AND LORABELL. IN GIRL SCOUTS SHE WOULD HAVE US COME TO HER HOME AND HAVE A WIENER ROAST FOR US. HER HUSBAND AND DAUGHTER WERE ALWAYS THERE TO HELP OUT. SHE HELPED ALL OF US EARN OUR BADGES IN SCOUTS.
