If ever there was a person who could be called a “Sweetheart”, it was Mary. In everything she did, said or believed, there was a foundation of honesty and sweetness.

I don’t think she ever said, did or even thought a mean thing in her tragically short life. Her concern was always for other people before herself and her generosity of spirit was infectious. She made the world a much better place by being a lively part of it.

I’m so grateful that she was a part of my life.

I came to first know Mary in the Fall of 1964, when Jerry Gould and I would go skateboarding down the hill directly in front of Paula and Sheila Sherrill's house on Stark Street. Mary would come through there on her horse, which she rode frequently back then. I swear, she was the sweetest girl I think I had ever met at that young age, and she was beautiful both inside and out. We came to become extremely close over the next year or two, as she treated me like a younger brother, since she had no younger one of her own. Even though she was four years older than I, she went with me to my senior year post-prom activities in 1968, as I wasn't dating anyone at that time. She was a junior in college at the time! How many girls would "lower" themselves to do that! She was strong in her religious beliefs and that showed in how fairly she treated others. I can't imagine anyone not liking her. I also remember that she always had to carry some type of candy bar with her at all times as she was very diabetic, and her blood sugar would drop to dangerous levels occasionally. It is one of life's sad inequities that she had to be taken from us at such an early age (30), and that she really never had "quality" years with respect to her health during her youth. To this day, I still often think of her fondly. What a beautiful person....

Tom Myers (1967)

When I was a freshman at IU Mary and I both had the opportunity to go to Pasedena Calif. for the Rose Bowl. It was OJ's senior year and IU with Gonzo, Isenbarger, Butcher and crew made a real game out of it. Mary and I cheered hard but So Cal eventually won.

I was asked by Mary's family to accompany her and "watch out" for her. I think in reality it was Mary who was watching out for me. We had a wonderful time.

We were randomly handed game tickets and ended up on the 50 yard line about 12 rows off the field. For the Rose parade we had front row seats in a great location. I know all of this was related to the blessing Mary walked in.

She was one of the most wonderful people I had the privilege of knowing. Mary was so kind and patient with everyone.

I also remember Mary riding her horse around Rockville. She always had time to stop and visit and share time with you. I only wish she could have shared more time here on earth.

Janet Lashbrook (Newton) (1965)

Janet Lashbrook Newton-----Mary was one of my best friends when I met her in the summer of our senior year. She had so many fruits of the Spirit working in her life which made her a joy to be around. Mary was fortunate to have a car so she drove Sandy Asbury and myself everywhere. Oh what fond memories of horse back riding, spending time at each others house, cooking and baking and just spending quality time together. Mary helped me to prepare for my wedding where she was one of my bridesmaid. Even though I moved to Texas, we always kept in touch. When I came back to live in Rockville, she and I spent more time together along with my 3 children. Words can not express the gift God gave me just by letting me meet her. Her going to heaven and leaving me behind took tears and years to work past the grief. I am a better person for knowing her because she deposited quality living and a gentle spirit. I will always remember her as the gift of friendship God gave me . I will always miss her and I know she will out run so many who have gone before us when it is my time to greet her again. Love You Mary---Janet
