Steve Nelson - Class Of 1962

Steve Nelson

Stephen Lang Nelson 27153126

Stephen Lang Nelson, 80, of Rockville, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Steve was born in Boone, North Carolina, on December 3, 1942, to the late John B. Nelson, II and Mary Alice (Helt) Nelson.Steve was a graduate of Rockville High School (Class of 1962), and for many years he worked at the school in the maintenance department.

Steve loved his family and he loved all sports, but most of all he loved golf. When he wasn’t playing golf, he was searching for golf balls. Steve could spot an errant golf ball from 200 yards even though it was knee deep in grass or half buried in mud. He did have an eagle eye. He also had a great short game, and in a family scramble, Steve’s approach shot always won out.

He was a collector. In addition to golf balls, he collected thousands of base-ball cards and 20th century silver coins. Steve was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother; he will be remembered by his family for his compassionate spirit.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Verna Nelson; his son, Steven A. Nelson, and his wife, Trish; three grandchildren: Megan Nelson, Morgan Nelson, and Trent Nelson, all of whom reside in Marion, IN; two sisters, Nina Nelson Alexander of Clinton, IN; Nancy Nelson Richardson of Silver Spring, MD; and one brother, John B. Nelson, III of Las Vegas, NV. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tammy Nelson.

Private family services will be held in the spring and remains will be interred at Helt’s Prairie Cemetery in Vermillion County, IN.

Memorials, should friends so desire, may be made in Steve’s memory to the Parke County Golf Course, 1640 North US Highway 41, Rockville, IN 47872.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Gooch Funeral Home & Crematory, Rockville. Online condolences may be shared at www.goochfuneralhome.com.

Condolences.
Seems he died around family, which is comforting. I think fondly of Steve as he was one of "our circle” at Rockville High who played poker at his parents’ house.  Lots of very fond memories.                     Ivan Augsburger (62)

Steve was a good friend to me all during school.  He was the deadliest outside shooter in the pickiup basketball games we played in various spots around town.  He did not have a mean bone in his body, and I am glad he had a long and happy life.
