Amfield Estella Ogden (Evans) - Class Of 1900

Amfield Estella Ogden was born in Parke County, Indiana 28 Jan 1880 and died 20 Feb 1953 in Los Angeles County, California. She was the daughter of Daniel Ogden (1839-1931) and Sarah E Marshall (1839-1908). She married Arthur Ernest Evans 30 Jul 1904 in Parke County, Indiana. Arthur Ernest Evans was born 15 Aug 1876 in Ohio.  They had two children born in Parke County; Sarah Jane born 2 Oct 1906 and Everett Ernest born 29 Aug 1908. Everett died 24 Jul 1993 in Oakland, Alameda County, California. By 1910 the family had moved to St John, Lake County, Indiana where two more daughters were probably born; Mary E born about 1911 and Virginia born about 1920. The family is living in Berkeley, Oakland County, California by 1930 sans Arthur and eldest daughter Sarah Jane. Estella is listed as a widow. I have not located Arthur's death date or location and I have not located the daughters after the 1930 census.

Estella's mother, Sarah E Marshall was born 9 Jan 1839 in Parke County and was the daughter of John Marshall. John Marshall was born 29 Sep 1799 in Orange County, North Carolina and served as a probate judge in Parke County beginning in the late 1840's. He was also a farmer in Adams Twp and was one of the earlier arrivals in the county circa the 1820's. He was married to Sarah McGinnis. John's parents, John (5 Jul 1768) & Elizabeth Marshill (the original surname spelling), were my 4th great grandparents.

Estella was my second cousin three times removed. I have not located any photographs of her but I am always looking!

My 3rd great grandfather, Jacob Marshall, (Judge John's brother) was born about 1792 in Orange County, North Carolina and he was the last of this family unit to move to Indiana, doing so about 1853. Jacob and his wife Prudence Ray moved with all of their known children to Parke County. I have placed two other brothers (Alfred and William) and one sister (Mary who married a cousin William Marshall) in Parke County also. Two brothers (Joseph and Francis) remained in North Carolina and I have made connections to Parke and neighboring Fountain Counties for descendants of these two brothers. They moved with the Quaker migration out of Orange, Chatham, and Alamance Counties, North Carolina but were for the most part not Quaker. John born in 1768 was disowned for marriage out in 1792 at Cane Creek MM in Orange County, North Carolina and most of the family remained unaffiliated with the Quakers after that time. There were exceptions. None of Judge John or my 3rd great grandfather Jacob's descendants were Quaker.

You can use as little or as much of this information as you would like. I may find other Marshall descendants's in your long list of alumni that I can provide biographies for and I have bookmarked your website for repeat visits. I am thrilled to find a place to share my information and it was your website that ennabled me to ascertain that Estella had married an Evans. Thank you for that!

I live in North Carolina although my father (Allan Duane Marshall) was born in Lewis County, Idaho so we took the long way back to North Carolina! I have visited Parke County once. I really want to return but don't have any immediate plans to do so. I will surely be back however.

I will be continuing my research and will contact you again if I make connections to your allumni.

Sincerely, Connie Marshall Thompson
