Jim Buchanan

September 23, 1936 - March 18, 2017

Former Boone County Prosecutor and retired attorney James P. Buchanan, 80, died Saturday, March 18 at Methodist Hospital. 

Mr. Buchanan was born on September 23, 1936 in Clinton, Indiana, the son of Warren B. and Sallye P. Buchanan. After graduating from Rockville High School, where he played football and basketball, he attended Wabash College, graduating in 1958, then the I.U. School of Law in Bloomington, graduating in 1961.

In February 1964, Mr. Buchanan married Margaret (Peggy) Bentley Buchanan whom he met while attending Indiana University. He served in the U .S. Navy from 1961 to 1965, honorably discharged in 1965 as a LTJG. 

The Buchanans moved to Lebanon in 1965, when Mr. Buchanan joined the law firm of Stewart and Richardson. He later began his own law practice, Buchanan and Buchanan, maintaining offices in Lebanon and Rockville.

Mr. Buchanan was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, the Boone County Bar Association, and the Indiana State Bar Association. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, was an avid reader, and hiked frequently in Lebanon’s Memorial Park and Eagle Creek Park, and in Arizona while vacationing. 

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Buchanan of Lebanon; daughter-in-law, Pamela Buchanan, Zionsville; grandson Thomas Buchanan, Indianapolis; granddaughter, Sarah Buchanan, Zionsville; granddaughter Lindsey Dils Bruggenschmidt and her husband Alex, of Zionsville; great-granddaughter Nora Bruggenschmidt; sister Elizabeth Buchanan and brother-in law, Roger Henderson of Tucson, Arizona; sister-in-law, Sue Jackson, Fayetteville, Arkansas, and nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and sons Christopher G. and John B. Buchanan. 

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Mary Catherine Barnes (Overpeck) (1958)

I remember Buck during my high school years and college.  He would give me a ride from I.U. to Rockville when I would go home on week ends.  Always a gentlemen.  Warren took care of my mother's estate and I would see Buck when I would go in Warren's office.  Nice to see old friends once again.   Buck was an excellent athlete.  We are never ready to give up our old friends.   Mary Catherine Barnes Overpeck  Class of 1958
