"Taciturn and not so loquacious!" I loved Mrs. Collings. She was my 8th grade English and Latin I and II teacher. Yes, I had her for 3 straight years. I always had the impression she thought that she was the only teacher assigning homework at Rockville, especially in her Latin classes. I learned much wisdom from those proverbs. Like Diana, I also had siblings whom she taught (four, to be exact).

She expected much and got the most out of many of her students. I miss her.

My mom grew up with Ginny so I was priviledged to know her outside of school until she passed away. She had a great sense of humor and a hearty laugh away from school. She demanded attention and learning in her classroom (as it should be). I do not remember much Latin but I do have an endless vocabulary due to our semester vocabulary tests. And the proverbs...I still remember and love lots of those as well. She was a great friend to my mom and dad and they loved playing cards together. I miss her.

I still remember some of the Latin I learned in her class. She was a great teacher and I remember her very thick glasses.

Mrs. Collings was one of my favorite teachers. I was lucky enough to have her for both Latin and English. I remember the proverbs, but what I remember best are all those vocabulary words posted on the bulletin board we were responsible for learning. Remember lackadaisical? That word has stayed with me from the day she introduced it to our class. Some of my favorite memories: her wonderful, boisterous laugh, her red geraniums that always seemed to bloom in winter, Latin Club with its Slave Auction, and the Latin Banquets. Another favorite memory is the time she got mad at us(Latin Club) as we worked to prepare for the Latin Banquet. You may remember it was held in the 4H building at the fairgrounds. She quite loudly informed us exactly how she felt about our efforts, or lack thereof. Instead of saying the word 'damn' she spelled it; however she spelled it D-A-M. We all looked at her in stunned silence until she realized she had spelled it incorrectly. She started laughing and continued laughing harder that any of us.

Sue Tarter (Newlin) (1960)

Ginny was a teacher (a very good one) who lasted a long time. She taught my father (Herbert Tarter), me (Sue Tarter), and my daughter (Janet Brown). She taught us all things that have and will go with us through all our years.

Ah yes, "Procrastination is the thief of time". I'm
still not very good with that one. Jesse Higgs

Grumpy was my secret love. I had two years of Latin and Bible Lit with her. I even talked her into letting me ride a motorcycle in the 4H building during Latin Banquet.
She was my mentor, teacher and friend. She encouraged me to go on to college even if I squeezed four years of college into eight she played a big role in getting me to go. When I was missing from class you could have found me in her room. Proverbs and Epigrams not to mention those Declensions ruled! After I came back to Rockville and bought the Corner Store Grumpy was back in my life stopping in and drinking a Coke and visiting and I was back to doing Proverbs and Epigrams and yes those Declensions. We teased each other to the last. Her last thing she asked me was about God and to hang on to my faith no matter were I go or what I go through. If you do not know who Sir Francis Bacon is
you never got to meet Mrs Collings.
Thank You Grumpy

Billy Gene Hill 66 (1966)

In the early 60s she was going to Germany and I to Oklahoma.  We agreed to bring each other a gift from our  respective vacations.  I brought her a small catis and she brought me a small Hummel.  "A stitch in time saves nine.  I find it most interesting how many students have posted a proverb from her blackboard.

Here's another blackboard posting by Mrs. Collings:

"How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is

To have a thankless child"
