Mary Louise Moscan (Art) VIEW PROFILE

TERRE HAUTE — Mary Louise Cook Moscan, 99, passed away March 7, 2011, at Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Feb. 14, 1912, in Terre Haute, to Frances Eluere Cook and John Valentine Cook.

Mary Louise graduated from Wiley High School, took undergraduate studies at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and the Art Institute in Chicago. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Indiana State University. For the first 10 years of her career, she was a graphic and commercial artist in Chicago. After family commitments were accomplished, she taught art in Rockville High School for 18 years before she retired. During her teaching time in Rockville, she designed a 9’x29’ ceramic mural for their new high school athletic complex. The mural was built and set in place by her high school students. After her retirement from teaching, she continued her work by taking on commissions for drawing homes and buildings rendered in a pen and ink with airbrush technique termed “Pen Painting”. These drawings were reproduced in a notepaper series of the historical and contemporary buildings and scenes of the Terre Haute area. An art exhibition of her paintings was held at the Swope Art Museum in 1991, and she received the Professional Artist Award from Arts Illiana in 1997.

She was a lifetime member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, a long-standing member and past president of the Woman’s’ Department Club, the Sheldon Swope Museum Alliance, the former Pen and Brush Club, and the Delta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society. She also served on the Swope Museum Board of Overseers and the St. Mary-of-the-Woods Alumnae Board.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John and Terri Moscan of Terre Haute; grandson, Jeff Moscan and his wife Colinie of Mooresville; granddaughter, Katie Moscan of Terre Haute; and great-granddaughter, Kristen Moscan of Mooresville. She also is survived by two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother and sister-in-law.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, March 10, 2011, at 12:05 p.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church, with Father Joel Burgett officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the funeral service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in her memory to St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of the Wabash Valley. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

I loved Mrs. Moscan.  From the way she treated me, I think she was pretty fond of me too.
