Arnold Lycan - Class Of 1965

Arnold Lycan

ARNOLD F. LYCAN JR. Arnold F. Lycan Jr. of rural Rockville, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016. Born October 19, 1947 in Tuscola, Illinois, he was the son of Arnold F. (Pat) Sr. and Norma Margaret Wycoff Lycan. His wife, Brenda nee’ Freeman, Lycan survives. He was a graduate of Indiana State University receiving both a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Education. He was a long serving member of the Danville Middle School, beginning in 1970 and teaching for 34 years. During his time he used his unique and engaging sense of humor to reach young people. He would often use current events and life stories to help illustrate U.S. History to his students. He believed that every student deserved his very best, and that there was no such thing as a lost cause. Additionally, he served as both a boys and girls basketball coach in various capacities during his tenure with Danville Community Schools. Arnold loved morel hunting, spending time in the woods and walking his dogs. He never met a stray he wouldn’t save, as he saved over 30 dogs from the streets in his lifetime. He loved his farm that he was able to work over the years with his father, mother, friends and children. He would often serenade his cows so that they would come up to be fed. He loved talking politics and playing devil’s advocate. Other survivors include a son, Nathanael (Danielle) of Brownsburg; and daughter, Breanna (Dusty) Rhoades of Rockville. His pride and joy were his two grandsons and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of a third this summer. Arnold enjoyed his extended family, his many nieces and nephews and those whom over the years he had considered family. A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 27 at Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds in the North Hall of the Conference Center in Danville. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. and continue after the service until 4 p.m. Arnold wanted people to come and share stories with one another, to have a Pepsi or sweet tea and to laugh with his friends and family. The Lycan family has requested in lieu of flowers to make a donation to the Southside Animal Shelter (ssasi.org) located at 1614 W. Edgewood Ave., Indianapolis, or the Rescue Farm (rescuefarm.org) 7101 Flowing Well Rd, Poland, Indiana, or your favorite no kill shelter in his honor. Baker Funeral Service, Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

I received the following email from an alumn this morning on the passing of Arnold "Arnie" Lycan.  Here are the comments of our fellow alumn:

Just wanted to let you know that Arnold Lycan passed away last evening February 17, 2016. He had been buying hay off of us the past few years. He came about once a week to get his 22 bales for his " pets" as he called them. We always talked for quite a while after loading, about the history of Union township and who all lived where and who owned what from the early 1830's to present. Your family came up several times as did many others from the 50's and 60's when we all helped out on the farms and baled many a bale of hay and straw. I am going to miss those good times reminiscing about the past. There will be a celebration of his life next Saturday in Danville but not sure where or what time.  He taught at Danville high school and had retired from there a few years ago.
